Chapter 4 - The Seal Breathes Its First Secret

Julian's fingers trembled as he stared down at the thick twine holding the envelope shut. The dark wax seal bore an intricate stamp of a raven with its wings clipped—a symbol he had never seen before in his life. The kitchen had grown deathly quiet, save for the faint, rhythmic ticking of the wall clock and the sound of his own shallow breathing.

"Don't you dare touch that wax, Julian," Arthur warned, his voice dangerously low as he stepped back from Marcus, though his eyes remained locked on the intruder.

"Let him open it, Arthur," Marcus urged, leaning against the marble counter with an air of cruel amusement. "Denial only delays the inevitable. Besides, the boy is smarter than you think. He probably already suspects that his entire life has been built on a foundation of carefully constructed lies."

Clara reached out, her fingers gently grazing Julian's shoulder. Her skin was ice-cold. "Julian, look at me. Listen to my voice. Whatever is inside that paper doesn't change how much your father and I love you. Do you understand?"

"Mom, what is the 2012 fire?" Julian asked, his voice barely above a whisper. The words Marcus had spoken in the hallway echoed relentlessly in his head. "Why did he say Dad built this house on stolen sand?"

Marcus chuckled softly. "Oh, precious innocence. He doesn't even know about the insurance payout. He doesn't know that the money used to buy this bright, modern kitchen came from a building that wasn't supposed to burn down until everyone inside had already evacuated."

Clara let out a sharp gasp, her hand flying to her throat. "That's a lie! Arthur was cleared by the investigators. There was no evidence—"

"There was no evidence because your father's business partners paid the right people to look the other way," Marcus interrupted, his tone chillingly casual. He pulled a small silver pocket watch from his trousers, clicking it open with a sharp snap. "And speaking of time, you have exactly forty minutes before my safety timer expires. If that envelope isn't opened and the contents verified by then, the digital backups deploy automatically."

Arthur stepped toward the counter, his expression hardening into one of desperate resolve. He reached out and gently pried the brown envelope from Julian's trembling fingers. "Give it here. If anyone is going to open this Pandora's box, it's going to be me."

"Be careful, darling," Clara whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes and cutting tracks down her pale cheeks. "He's trying to provoke us. This could be another trap."

"Everything we've done for the past eight years has been a trap, Clara," Arthur said grimly. He slipped a thick, calloused thumb under the dark wax seal, pressing down until the brittle substance cracked with a dry, satisfying snap that sounded like a breaking bone in the silent room.
