Brooke leaned over her mother’s shoulder, reading the typed terms:

*1. The deed of the lake property will transfer permanently and solely to the Vance Community Historic Conservancy.*

*2. The main house will be subdivided into four rent-free transitional apartments for single mothers and displaced rural families.*

*3. Deborah Vance will retain lifetime occupancy of the two-bedroom ground-floor garden suite, conditional upon twenty hours of weekly volunteer service at the county food pantry.*

*4. Brooke Vance will receive no cash distribution, but may enroll in the four-year paid carpentry and drafting apprenticeship at Vance Timberworks.*

Brooke stared at Nora in absolute horror. ""You... you want me to work in a sawmill? You want Mother to serve soup to homeless people?""

""I want you to learn what a dollar costs, Brooke,"" Nora said evenly. ""And I want Mother to learn that the people she spent thirty years looking down on are the only reason she has a roof over her head tonight.""
