Chapter 10: The Signing in the Dust

Deborah stared at the contract, her hands shaking violently.

For forty years, Deborah had built her entire identity on social hierarchy, exclusive invitations, and the performance of effortless wealth. To sign this paper meant admitting to the entire town that her castle was gone, and that she was now a servant in the very community she had patronized.

She looked at Nora’s eyes—clear, unyielding, and completely immune to guilt.

Deborah picked up the pen.

With trembling fingers, she signed her name across the bottom of the deed transfer.

Brooke watched in stunned silence as her mother pushed the document back toward Nora.

""When do the moving vans arrive?"" Deborah whispered, her voice barely audible.

""Tomorrow morning at eight,"" Nora replied, picking up the contract and checking the signatures. ""Samuel has already built the partition framing for the family suites. Your apartment will be clean, warm, and secure. But the front gates are coming down permanently.""

Nora pointed toward the tool rack on the wall.

""Brooke, your apprenticeship starts on Monday morning at six o'clock sharp. If you are thirty seconds late, your training stipend is forfeited. Take a pair of work gloves from the bin on your way out.""

Brooke looked at the heavy leather gloves, then looked at her sister’s calloused, powerful hands.

For the first time in her life, Brooke saw that true power did not come from wearing a white lace dress; it came from knowing how to hold the tools that build the world.

She reached into the wooden bin, took the leather gloves, and walked out into the cold autumn sunshine.
