Chapter 13: The Dedication of the Pavilion
In late September, on the second anniversary of the canceled wedding, the town of Lake Geneva dedicated its new *Public Waterfront Community Pavilion*.
The monumental open-air structure sat directly on the public beach, built entirely from massive white oak timbers hand-hewn by Nora, Brooke, Samuel, and their apprentices.
Its vaulted king-post trusses rose thirty feet into the clear blue autumn sky, framing breathtaking views of the lake without blocking the horizon for the townspeople.
Over four hundred citizens gathered on the grassy lawn for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The town mayor stepped up to the microphone, his voice booming over the sound of the gentle waves.
""For fifty years, private developers have tried to buy this shoreline to build gated resorts that working people could never afford,"" the mayor said. ""They wanted to put walls around the water. But the Vance sisters gave us something that will belong to our children's children for a hundred years.""
The crowd erupted into thunderous, joyous applause.
Nora stood at the base of the central oak pillar, wearing a simple dark linen blazer and work trousers.
Beside her stood Brooke, her arm linked tightly through Nora’s, her face glowing with radiant, hard-earned pride.
