Chapter 2 - Beneath the Patio

The silence that followed Mark’s confession was heavier than the stagnant water churning in the pool basin. Elena lowered the black vacuum hose, letting the pump hum idly against the grass as the dirty water slowly began to swirl in tighter circles. She wiped her palm across her patterned blouse, leaving a smear of dark mud, her breathing measured and painfully deliberate. Mark stood frozen a few feet away, his chest still rising and falling beneath his dark t-shirt, his gaze locked onto the exact spot where the concrete patio met the rusted metal frame of the diving board.

"I didn't think I had to," Elena said quietly, her voice devoid of its previous anger, replaced by a chilling calm that unnerved him far more than her shouting ever could. "Not until the township sent the zoning notice last week. They want to inspect the drainage lines. They’re going to dig right through the shallow end, Mark. They’ll find the galvanized steel drum before the week is out."

Mark took a half-step backward, his sneakers scraping against the loose gravel. "We can stop them. We can file an injunction, delay the survey, say the soil is unstable—we can do anything besides standing here letting the county tear our lives apart."

"Our lives?" Elena let out a dry, mirthless laugh that didn't reach her eyes. "There hasn't been a 'we' in this house since the summer of 2004, Mark. There was just you, a shovel, and a secret you thought you buried deep enough that God himself wouldn't spot it."

She bent down, gripping the heavy rubber handle of the vacuum once more, her knuckles turning white as she redirected the foul discharge toward the garden bed. The muddy liquid hissed against the dry hydrangeas, instantly wilting the petals.

Mark reached out, his hand hovering inches from her shoulder before he pulled it back as if he had been burned. "If the police find out what's in that drum, it ruins everything. Not just for me. For Sarah too. She thinks the world of her father."

Elena stopped moving. The vacuum motor sputtered and died, plunging the backyard into an abrupt, suffocating quiet. She turned her head slowly, her gray hair catching the harsh afternoon sun.

"Sarah is coming home this evening," Elena said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "And she brought her new fiancé. The criminal defense attorney."
