Chapter 11 - The Man in the Mirror

Sarah stopped dead on the threshold of the motel room, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at the man sitting in the worn armchair. The jagged scar along his jawline caught the dim amber glow of the bedside lamp, casting long, distorted shadows across his weathered face.
"Uncle Tom?" Sarah whispered, the words slipping out of her mouth like a forbidden prayer. She took a hesitant step forward, her hands trembling at her sides. "How... how is this possible? Dad said... everyone said you were gone."
Tom Mercer let out a dry, humorless chuckle, leaning his head back against the greasy fabric of the armchair. He didn't look like a ghost; he looked like a man who had spent two decades hiding in plain sight, carrying the crushing weight of a secret that had finally become too heavy to bear alone.
"Your father didn't kill me, Sarah," Tom said softly, his eyes shifting toward David standing protectively by the door. "Though God knows he tried his absolute best that night in the summer of 2004."
David stepped fully into the room, letting the door click shut behind him to ensure their privacy. He slipped his phone into his pocket, keeping his eyes locked on the older man. "Mark confessed to burying a body in a steel drum beneath the pool patio. If you didn't end up inside that container, Tom... whose remains did Mark and Elena pour concrete over?"
Tom’s expression darkened, the warmth draining from his features as he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "That’s the tragic irony of it all. Mark didn't bury me. That night in the garage, when we fought over the missing bank records, I hit him first. I knocked him to the floor, grabbed my briefcase, and ran out the back gate before he could recover."
Sarah’s brow furrowed in confusion, stepping closer to the edge of the coffee table. "Then why did the drum smell like rot? Why did Arthur say you took the fall?"
"Because Arthur didn't take the fall for embezzlement alone," Tom explained, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The night I ran away, someone else broke into the office warehouse looking for the same ledger I took. Someone startled the night watchman, beat him to death with a heavy iron wrench, and stuffed his body into the very same steel drum Mark had bought for our new pool construction."
Elena, who had silently slipped past David into the room just moments before, let out a sharp gasp, her hand flying to her chest as she stumbled against the cheap dresser.
"Arthur..." Elena whispered, the horror dawning on her face with crushing clarity. "Arthur killed the night watchman."

Tom nodded slowly, looking directly at Elena for the first time. "And Mark helped him cover it up the next morning, thinking they were hiding my body to protect the business. They poured four feet of concrete over an innocent man, while I watched from a Greyhound bus heading straight out of state."
