Chapter 1 - The First Spill

The heavy black plastic of the vacuum hose jerked violently in Elena’s grip as a thick stream of dark, stagnant water vomited from its nozzle, churning the already foul surface of the backyard swimming pool into a froth of dead leaves and sediment. She stood near the cracked concrete patio, her shoulder-length gray hair sticking slightly to her damp forehead, dressed in her usual patterned blouse and beige trousers. She adjusted her footing, trying to ignore the biting humidity of the late summer afternoon and the heavy, metallic smell of stagnant bottom-sludge rising from the deep end.
Footsteps crunched heavily across the dry gravel pathway beside the redwood fence.
Mark burst into her peripheral vision, his dark t-shirt damp with sweat, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched near his temple. He didn't slow down until he reached the edge of the shallow end, his chest heaving as he stared in disbelief at the black water staining the pristine blue tiles a muddy brown.
"You're making everything more complicated!" Mark shouted, his voice cracking slightly with a raw edge of panic that he tried to mask as fury.
Elena didn't drop the hose, but she let her gaze drift toward him with slow, deliberate indifference, the heavy water still pulsing against the pool wall.
"Go ahead, hit me!" Elena yelled back, throwing her hands up in sudden, exasperated defiance, turning her back on him completely as the murky spray continued to feed the mess below.
Mark froze, his fists clenching and unclenching at his sides. He took a sharp step closer, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper right beside her ear.
"You think this is about the pool, Elena? Digging this up won't wash away what's underneath it."
Elena slowly turned her head back to look at him, her eyes narrowing as a cold realization settled into her chest.
"Who said anything about washing it away?" Elena whispered. "I'm digging it up so everybody can finally see what you buried beneath the concrete twenty years ago."
Mark’s face drained of color, his eyes darting toward the heavy concrete slab beneath the patio table.

"You didn't," Mark choked out.
