Chapter 1 - The Miranda Warning of the Sandbox

Officer Miller knelt on the rough concrete, his peaked cap casting a hard shadow over his stern face. The flashing red and blue lights of his cruiser painted rhythmic streaks across the white municipal building behind them. He pointed a gloved finger straight at the toddler in the yellow romper.

“You are under arrest,” Miller said, his voice clipped and entirely devoid of amusement.

Leo blinked, his lower lip trembling as he looked down at the orange and white tabby kitten nestled beside him. A few crumbs of a broken oatmeal cookie rested on the pavement between them.

Leo looked up with wide, tearful eyes, pressing his tiny hands together in a desperate pleading gesture.

“Please don’t arrest me,” Leo whispered softly, his voice cracking with a heartbreaking innocence that defied his age of eighteen months.

Miller held his ground for a long, agonizing beat before pulling out his department-issued smartphone. He tapped the screen, his expression shifting from stone-cold authority to a wry, guarded smirk.

“Hmm, your cuteness is viral,” Miller said, turning the glowing screen toward the toddler. “But one thing is missing.”

Leo stared up with big watery eyes, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dust on his cheek. His hands remained firmly clasped together.

From the corner of the sidewalk, a sharp voice pierced the quiet afternoon air. It belonged to Clara, Leo’s older sister by barely two decades, who came sprinting out of the grocery store with a bag of groceries clutched to her chest.

“Step away from my brother, Officer!” Clara shouted, her boots slamming hard against the pavement. “What do you think you’re doing to a baby? Are you out of your mind?”

Miller didn’t flinch. He slowly stood up to his full height, towering over Clara while keeping the smartphone active in his right hand.

“I’m doing my job, Ms. Vance,” Miller replied smoothly. “Your little brother here is wanted for grand theft of municipal property. Specifically, the gold-plated mayor’s seal that went missing from City Hall this morning.”

Clara gasped, dropping a box of crackers onto the sidewalk. “That’s impossible! He’s a toddler! He can barely walk across this street without tripping over his own white shoes!”

“And yet,” Miller said, spinning the phone around to show a live social media feed with over two million views, “footage shows a baby in a yellow romper waddling out of the executive suite holding the exact artifact. And look who's tagged in the background of the video.”

Clara froze, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she recognized the distinctive license plate of her own family car parked just down the block.
