Chapter 6 - The Silver-Toothed Councilman

The barrel of Officer Miller’s service pistol trembled by a fraction of an inch—not out of fear, but from the sheer, staggering magnitude of the tactical checkmate. Councilman Vance stood completely unbothered, his silver-capped teeth gleaming under the harsh strobing lights of the police cruiser.

“You’re bluffing,” Miller said, though his voice lacked the absolute conviction it had carried moments before.

“Am I?” Vance chuckled softly, tapping a sleek black remote control in his palm. A tiny red indicator light blinked in a steady, agonizing rhythm. “Technology is wonderful these days, Officer. We microchip our pets, our luggage, and, in the case of orphans whose parents signed away custody waivers to the city welfare board, our foster children.”

Clara felt the floor drop out from under her feet. She stared down at Leo, her breath catching in her throat. “Foster children? What is he talking about, Leo? You’re my brother! Uncle Tom said you were our cousin’s kid!”

Leo didn’t look at Clara. Instead, his tiny fingers reached up to scratch weakly at the collar of his yellow romper, right near the shoulder seam where a small, rigid lump hummed silently beneath the fabric.

“The bad man said I belong to the city,” Leo whispered, his lower lip trembling as fresh tears welled up in his big watery eyes.

Clara’s vision swam with red-hot rage. She shifted Leo into one arm and lunged forward, but the tactical operatives raised their rifles instantly, blocking her path with cold, unyielding efficiency.

“Stay back, Ms. Vance,” Vance warned, his smile vanishing into a razor-thin line of calculated cruelty. “Your family has lived on that foundation for three generations. You thought it was just a coincidence that your grandfather built the municipal waterworks back in nineteen-fifty? No, Mr. Vance designed the underground grid with a very specific structural flaw. A flaw that only a direct bloodline heir can unlock.”

Miller kept his gun trained on Vance’s chest, his eyes darting frantically toward the Hazmat team working by the storm drain. “That’s why you needed the baby. The municipal seal biometric lock requires genetic verification from the original architect’s lineage to override the failsafe.”

“Bingo, Officer,” Vance said, stepping closer to Clara despite the armed standoff. He reached out a hand toward the toddler. “Hand over the boy, Ms. Vance. Unless you want every child in the tri-county area waking up with the same neurological shutdown your uncle is currently experiencing in the county hospital.”

Clara pulled Leo back against her chest, her entire body shaking with fury and terror. “My uncle isn’t sick from the water! You poisoned him because he found out about the land grab!”

“He was getting old anyway,” Vance replied coldly.

Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet gave a terrifying, violent shudder. A low, subterranean groan echoed up through the storm drain, followed by a geyser of black, viscous sludge shooting twenty feet into the air.
