Chapter 7 - The Geyser Beneath the Pavement

The foul-smelling black sludge rained down over the street, hissing as it hit the hot asphalt and coating the police cruisers in a toxic, tar-like film. The tactical operatives stumbled backward, coughing violently as the noxious fumes filled the damp evening air.

Councilman Vance cursed, dropping his calm demeanor as he shielded his expensive charcoal suit with his forearm. “What did you do?” he yelled, glaring at Officer Miller. “The pressure valve wasn't supposed to blow for another hour!”

“That wasn't my doing,” Miller shouted back, keeping his pistol steady even as his eyes watered from the toxic vapor. He keyed his shoulder radio with his free hand. “Hazmat actual, report! What just breached the secondary sector?”

Static crackled over the radio, followed by the frantic, muffled screams of a technician. “Sir! The underground reservoir isn't just contaminated with industrial solvent! There’s a secondary containment vault down here—a sealed military bunker from the nineteen-sixties! The pressure shift just cracked the blast door!”

Clara covered Leo’s nose and mouth with her hoodie sleeve, coughing as the heavy, chemical-laden fog rolled across the sidewalk. The orange and white tabby kitten scrambled out of her pocket, leaping onto the roof of the nearest police cruiser to escape the rising puddle of sludge.

“A military bunker?” Clara yelled over the roar of escaping gas. “What does the military have to do with our neighborhood?”

Vance wiped a streak of black sludge from his cheek, his silver teeth bared in a snarl. He punched the button on his black remote control repeatedly, but the red indicator light remained dead, flickering once before dying out entirely.

“The signal is jammed,” Vance muttered, his composure completely shattering. He glared at Leo, who was staring down at the puddle with a strange, blank fascination. “The boy… his biometric signature is overriding the local relay tower. He’s broadcasting a master shutdown protocol.”

Miller’s eyes widened as he pieced the terrifying puzzle together. “The microchip isn't a tracker, Vance. It’s a biological transceiver. Your corporation didn't just plant him in Clara’s home—you genetically engineered him to be the living, breathing key to access whatever is locked inside that bunker.”

“He’s company property!” Vance screamed, lunging forward with a desperate fury. He drew a suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster, pointing it directly at Leo. “If I can’t use the key, nobody can!”

Before Vance could pull the trigger, the orange and white tabby kitten let out a fierce, blood-curdling screech from the roof of the police car. With an astonishing leap, the tiny animal launched itself through the air, sinking its claws directly into Councilman Vance’s face.
