THE VELVET TRAP / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8

The deputies shifted uncomfortably on the marble floor, looking between the powerful attorney and the unyielding couple on the stairs. Arthur Sterling adjusted his silk tie, his professional demeanor cracking under the sudden weight of exposure. He had prepared for a standard shakedown of a panicked, defenseless woman, not a counter-surveillance operation backed by airtight digital forensics.

“That drive contains fabricated data,” Sterling recovered quickly, his voice sharp with manufactured authority. “Obtained illegally without a warrant, I might add. It’s inadmissible in any civil or criminal proceeding.”

“It’s not civil, Arthur, and it’s not private property,” Julian interjected, stepping down to join Rebecca on the ground floor. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her, a unified front that completely disrupted the dynamic Beatrice had spent decades maintaining. “The master terminal inside the family suite is corporate property of the Vance Foundation, of which I am still an active voting board member. Accessing our own company logs to investigate a crime committed on our premises is entirely legal.”

Beatrice gripped the carved wooden banister so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her carefully constructed facade of aristocratic superiority was beginning to fracture under the blinding light of truth. She realized that her son had finally broken free of her psychological leash.

“You ungrateful fool,” Beatrice hissed, leaning over the banister, her voice trembling with fury. “I built this family’s empire from the ground up. Everything you have, everything you stand on, exists only because I allowed it to. You think a little digital bluff is going to strip me of my legacy?”

“No, Beatrice,” Rebecca said calmly, tucking the flash drive safely back into her pocket. “We don’t want your legacy. We just want you to stop writing the rules for everyone else's destruction.”

The lead deputy cleared his throat, stepping forward and looking directly at Arthur Sterling. “Counselor, if there’s an active internal investigation regarding fabricated evidence and tampered security feeds, we can’t execute this search warrant until the state cybercrimes division reviews these logs. Protocol requires us to secure the premises for all parties pending an internal audit.”

Sterling’s expression turned thunderous. He shot Beatrice a look that communicated a silent, devastating truth: the trap had sprung backward, catching them both inside its iron jaws.

“This isn't over,” Sterling muttered, signaling the deputies to step back. He turned on his heel toward the heavy oak front doors. “You’ve bought yourselves a few hours, Julian. But a dragon doesn't surrender its hoard just because a thief finds a loose stone.”
