THE VELVET TRAP / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5

The corridors of the Vance estate at three in the morning resembled the halls of a sleeping fortress. Portraits of stern ancestors lined the dim walls, their painted eyes seemingly following Julian and Rebecca as they crept toward the private family wing. Julian led the way, his velvet jacket discarded for a simple black shirt, his movements tense and hyper-aware. Rebecca followed close behind, her light blue dress rustling softly against the carpet until she gathered the fabric in one hand to silence it.

They reached the heavy mahogany doors of the master suite. The brass handle felt freezing under Julian’s palm. He turned it slowly, wincing at the faint, oiled click of the latch. The room was vast, bathed in pale moonlight streaming through towering bay windows that overlooked the Atlantic. Everything was pristine, smelling faintly of lavender and old money.

Julian navigated the labyrinth of antique furniture with practiced ease, walking directly toward a hidden panel behind a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. He pressed a sequence of carved wooden books, and a discreet compartment slid open, revealing a glowing security terminal embedded in the wall.

“Here,” Julian whispered, stepping aside. “This is the master terminal Marcus mentioned.”

Rebecca immediately stepped up to the screen, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. Lines of green code and digital timestamps scrolled past her eyes. She bypassed the standard user interfaces, diving straight into the system logs to unearth the hidden administrative overrides used during the gala.

“She’s thorough,” Rebecca muttered, her brow furrowing in concentration as the glow of the monitor illuminated her tense features. “She didn’t just create a blind spot; she routed the secondary feed to a personal cloud storage account. If we can find the IP address of the receiving device, we’ll have proof of premeditation.”

Julian watched her, a knot twisting tightly in his stomach. For all his resentment toward his mother’s domineering control, he had never imagined her capable of such calculated cruelty against his wife. The realization that his entire life was built on a foundation of manipulation and conditional affection threatened to crush him.

“Beatrice never does anything without an exit strategy,” Julian said quietly, keeping watch by the heavy double doors of the suite. “If she’s divorcing my father and cutting me out of the trust, she needed a definitive scandal to justify it to the board of directors. The Vance Foundation owns half the city’s real estate. A public theft scandal makes us both liabilities.”

Rebecca’s fingers paused on the keyboard. A small data window popped up on the screen, displaying a series of encrypted file transfers that had occurred precisely at 9:45 PM during the height of the ballroom celebration.

“Got it,” Rebecca breathed, her eyes widening. “The receiving IP address doesn't belong to a cloud server. It belongs to a burner smartphone currently registered to Arthur Sterling’s private law office.”
