Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Ballroom threw blinding, refracted light across the polished mahogany floors, illuminating the pinnacle of high society. Julian stood frozen between two women whose fury and terror tore the glittering room apart. His maroon velvet tuxedo jacket, usually a symbol of effortless confidence, now felt like a suffocating armor. Across from him, Beatrice Vance radiated aristocratic wrath. Her blonde hair was pinned into an immaculate braided updo, and her throat was weighted by a heavy pearl necklace interwoven with emerald gems that matched the venom in her pale blue eyes. She pointed a manicured finger directly at Rebecca.
Rebecca clutched a beige satin clutch to her chest like a shield. Her dark hair, braided to mirror the older woman’s intricate style, was undone by her trembling hands. The light blue halter dress she wore felt suddenly freezing against her skin. Only moments ago, laughter had filled the room. Now, the silence was deafening, broken only by Beatrice’s ringing accusation that cut through the champagne-laden air.
“She took my diamonds!” Beatrice hissed, her voice trembling with calculated rage.
Julian turned his head slowly, his eyes darting from Beatrice’s twisted expression to Rebecca’s tear-stained face. The weight of the room pressed down on them all. Julian swallowed hard, the muscles in his jaw ticking. He reached out a hesitant hand, gesturing toward the small bag gripped in Rebecca’s white-knuckled fingers. The social standing they had all built over decades hung by a thread, waiting to snap.
“Rebecca, open it,” Julian said, his tone flat, strained by a desperate need to dispel the nightmare before it consumed them entirely.
Rebecca’s chest rose and fell in shallow, panicked breaths. She shook her head, tears spilling over her dark lashes. With trembling fingers, she unsnapped the clasp of the beige clutch. Inside lay a white leather necklace box. As she lifted the lid, a multi-million-dollar diamond necklace stared back at them, catching the harsh overhead light. Her face crumpled into a mask of pure shock and devastation.
“I didn't put that there! Please check the cameras!” Rebecca cried, her voice cracking with raw, helpless despair.
In the background, mounted high on the polished wall, a security monitor flickered. It broadcasted grainy black-and-white footage of the exact spot where they stood, capturing the damning transfer of the box. Onlookers whispered behind cupped hands, while Beatrice stared with cold, unyielding malice.
“You planned this!” Beatrice barked, stepping forward.

Before anyone could intervene, Beatrice lunged in a dramatic outburst. The violent motion snapped the clasp of her heirloom necklace. Pearls scattered across the shiny floor with a sound like falling rain, rolling in every direction. Beatrice ignored the rolling gems, her eyes locked on Julian with venomous finality.
“My divorce attorney will handle the rest!” she declared, turning her back on the wreckage.
