CHAPTER 3: THE CIPHER IN THE HEIRLOOM

The Vance residence, a secluded Craftsman home nestled in the dense pine woods of Bucks County, was built like a fortress beneath its cozy exterior. Inside the basement laboratory, Raymond placed the salvaged contents of Box 404 on a stainless steel worktable: an old silver locket and an encrypted solid-state drive belonging to Toby’s late mother, Dr. Clara Vance.
Clara had been a neurobiologist who fought to humanize the Aegis initiative before her untimely passing five years prior.
"Your mother didn't hide this to protect a secret," Raymond explained, his voice catching slightly. "She hid it to protect a conscience."
Toby placed his thumb against the locket’s seam. A tiny micro-mechanism clicked, projecting a faint holographic grid across the desk. It wasn’t a weapon schematic or bank codes; it was a registry of seventy-two former Aegis candidates—children who had been scattered across the country under false identities, living normal lives.
"The Syndicate found the breach," Toby said, his eyes scanning the fast-moving data strings. "They want the database. They want to turn those kids into living weapons."
"Over my dead body," Raymond growled, racking the slide of his service pistol.

Toby gently placed his hand on Raymond’s firearm, easing the hammer back down. "Violence is their language, Dad. If we speak it, they win before the first shot is fired. We protect them with the truth."
