CHAPTER 12: UNEXPECTED REDEMPTION

Two months later, Toby and Raymond visited a minimum-security medical facility outside Baltimore. Behind a guarded window sat Marcus Crane, noticeably weaker but alert, undergoing palliative care under federal supervision.

Crane looked up as Toby approached the glass.

"Barnes told me you testified on my behalf," Crane said through the intercom. "Kept me out of maximum isolation."

"You made the right choice on that roof," Toby said. "Choices have to matter, Marcus. Otherwise, redemption is just a fairy tale."

Crane smiled weakly, tapping his finger against the glass. "My sister called yesterday. The feds returned her house. She said someone sent an anonymous scholarship fund for her kids."

Toby simply smiled back, offering no denial.

"Take care of yourself, kid," Crane said, his eyes clear and peaceful for the first time in his life. "The world needs more mirrors like you."
