Chapter 7: The Ledger of Grace

The screen door opened softly.

Dr. Marcus Hayes stepped out onto the porch, holding an umbrella. He looked down at the kneeling man in the mud, his weathered face showing neither anger nor surprise.

""Stand up on your feet, Julian,"" Marcus said gently, his voice deep and steady. ""No man gets healed by groveling in the dirt.""

Julian looked up through his tears, his teeth chattering with cold. ""Dr. Marcus... is my mother inside?""

""She is,"" Marcus replied, holding the door open. ""Wipe your boots and come in out of the weather.""

Julian stood up on shaking legs, took off his wet jacket, and stepped into the warm clinic foyer.

Evelyn walked out of the consultation room. She stopped three paces away, looking at her son.

She saw his raw, blistered hands, his hollow cheeks, and the absolute, total collapse of every defense mechanism he had ever possessed.

""Hello, Julian,"" Evelyn said softly, her voice steady and warm.

Julian looked at his mother, and the remaining fragments of his pride disintegrated. He covered his face with his rough hands, weeping with deep, shuddering sobs that shook his entire body.

""Mom..."" Julian choked out, falling against the wooden doorframe. ""I lost everything. Alyssa left... the apartment was repossessed... I have no money, no career, and no friends. I spent my whole life being an arrogant fool... and I broke your heart to buy things that didn't even matter.""

Evelyn walked forward, reached out, and pulled her son’s hands away from his face, holding his trembling fingers in her strong, calloused hands.

""You didn't lose everything, Julian,"" Evelyn said softly, tears of hard-earned peace glistening in her grey eyes. ""You only lost the illusions. Now look at me.""

Julian looked into his mother’s eyes.

""If you came here looking for an inheritance or a bailout, the bus returns to Richmond at six o'clock,"" Evelyn said firmly. ""But if you came here to learn how to earn an honest loaf of bread with your own hands, there is a cot in the barn and a shovel by the compost heap.""

May you like

Julian took a deep, shuddering breath, nodding through his tears. ""Give me the shovel, Mom. Please.""
