Without Evelyn’s home as collateral, the commercial bank denied Alyssa’s two-hundred-thousand-dollar business expansion loan.
The lease on their luxury four-thousand-dollar-a-month high-rise apartment expired. When Julian attempted to negotiate a three-month extension, the property management firm issued a formal notice to vacate within fourteen days due to consecutive late payments.
The leasing company repossessed Alyssa’s imported sports car from the parking garage, leaving them with Julian’s nine-year-old sedan with a failing transmission.
They were forced to move into a cramped, one-bedroom garden apartment behind a strip mall in Henrico County.
Alyssa spent her days screaming at collection agencies over the phone, while Julian sat on a stained hand-me-down sofa, surrounded by unopened bank default notices and resume rejection emails.
The corporate executive network that Julian had spent five years courting vanished the moment his father’s trust capital was exhausted. The country club suspended his membership, his fair-weather business associates stopped answering his text messages, and his resume—bloated with hollow consulting titles—was dismissed by every legitimate engineering firm in the state.
One freezing evening in January, as the apartment radiator clanked noisily in the dark, Alyssa packed her three designer suitcases.
""Where are you going?"" Julian asked, his voice cracked and hollow.
Alyssa stood at the door, wearing her designer coat, her eyes cold as ice. ""My parents bought me a plane ticket to Scottsdale. I’m filing for an uncontested divorce on Monday, Julian. I didn't marry a man who lives in a basement apartment.""
