Chapter 8: The Master of the Keel

In the spring of the following year, *The Blue Harbor Maritime Guild* completed the framing of *The Wanderer*.

The seventy-five-foot vessel stood proud in her timber cradle: her white oak keel was solid and straight; her cedar hull planking was fastened with over two thousand hand-carved locust trunnels; her deck beams were planed to a glass-smooth finish using native Maine white pine.

The town of Blue Harbor declared the launch a public holiday.

Over four hundred citizens—local fishermen, apprentice shipwrights, schoolteachers, and coastal families—gathered on the granite pier beneath a brilliant, cloudless May sky.

David stood at the timber staging beside Claire and six-year-old Lily.

Lily wore a clean white cotton dress with a blue ribbon in her hair, holding a small bouquet of wild coastal asters and sweet peas.

Caleb Thorne stepped up to the microphone, his voice booming across the sparkling bay.

""For thirty years, commercial yards told us that traditional wooden ships were relics of an obsolete era,"" Caleb spoke to the assembly. ""They told us to build with cheap fiberglass and steel that rusts in the salt. But this vessel—rebuilt by honest hands that chose redemption over pride—proves that when a community honors the truth, we build ships that will ride out every gale on the ocean.""

Caleb turned to Lily, handing her a bottle of sparkling Maine apple cider.

""Lily, do us the honor of naming the ship.""

Lily stepped forward, her hazel eyes shining with boundless joy. She swung the bottle against the bronze stem band with a clean, triumphant *crack*.

""I name you *The Wanderer*!"" Lily shouted happily. ""May you protect the brave and always find the harbor!""

The crowd erupted into thunderous, joyous cheers as the heavy timber release blocks were knocked away.

*The Wanderer* slid down the greased slipway with a majestic, fluid rush, striking the cold blue waters of Penobscot Bay with a glorious burst of white foam, floating high, proud, and perfectly balanced against the rolling Atlantic tide.
