Chapter 14: The Vigil of the Tide

On a clear, warm evening in late September, when the autumn dusk was painting the sky in shades of violet, amber, and molten gold, David and Claire walked out to the edge of the timber slipway.

Down in the shallows, nine-year-old Thomas was wading with a hand net, catching small green shore crabs and releasing them safely into the eelgrass, his bright laughter drifting across the calm water.

Out in the bay, *The Wanderer* rested peacefully at her mooring, her white sails furled, her lines clean, reflecting the evening stars in the glassy tide.

David wrapped his arm around Claire’s waist, pulling her close against his chest.

Claire leaned her head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, unhurried rhythm of his heart and the deep, eternal breathing of the sea.

""Do you remember the ballroom in Boston, David?"" Claire asked softly, watching the first evening stars appear over the water.

""I remember every second, Claire,"" David replied gently, kissing her temple.

""You looked so broken that night,"" Claire whispered, touching the oak ring on his finger. ""You thought your whole life was a lie.""

David turned her gently, looking into her clear hazel eyes with unshakeable reverence.

""The lie was just a shadow, Claire,"" David said softly. ""It vanished the moment we brought our daughter into the light.""
