Chapter 3: The Departure to the Coast

By midnight, the winter wind over Boston was howling across the harbor, driving icy rain against the dark brownstone facades of Beacon Hill.

David did not return to the penthouse on Commonwealth Avenue.

He packed three leather duffel bags in the trunk of an old 2018 Volvo wagon: his architectural blueprints, his collection of maritime drafting compasses, Claire’s botanical journals, and Lily’s favorite hand-carved wooden toy animals.

They drove north on Route 1, leaving behind the suffocating scandals, the social columns, and the toxic halls of high-society Boston, crossing the state line into Maine.

There, situated on a granite point overlooking the crashing Atlantic surf of Penobscot Bay, sat *The Blue Harbor Timber Mill & Boatyard*—a 19th-century water-powered sawmill and wooden shipwright guild that had belonged to Claire’s late father, master carpenter Thomas Evans.

The property was unpretentious and sound: weathered cedar-shingled workshops, an ancient stone blacksmith forge, and a protected timber dock where wooden workboats were repaired by hand.

When the Volvo rumbled across the gravel yard at dawn, the morning mist was beginning to lift from the churning grey water.

Standing on the timber slipway was Caleb Thorne, seventy-one, a master shipwright with a grey beard and hands like weathered oak, who had built wooden dories with Claire’s father for forty years.

Caleb wore a heavy wool pea coat and rubber sea boots, holding a warm mug of dark chicory coffee.

He walked over to the car, his kind blue eyes crinkling with deep, understanding warmth as Claire and David stepped down into the crisp, salt-scented air.

""Heard the thunder from Boston all the way up the coast, Claire,"" Caleb said softly, his voice deep as the sea.

Claire stepped into the old shipwright’s embrace, breathing in the scent of pine pitch, woodsmoke, and cold salt spray.

""The thunder is over, Caleb,"" Claire smiled gently. ""We’ve come home to build.""
