Chapter 9: The Voices in the Soil

By the following spring, the Holloway Commons had transformed into a thriving community agricultural initiative.

The local agricultural extension office partnered with the trust to establish an experimental heirloom seed bank. High school students from the district arrived on buses every Thursday afternoon to learn soil regeneration, compost dynamics, and water conservation techniques.

Sarah managed the educational workshops, while Madeline—whose sharp administrative mind was finally put to honest work—coordinated the distribution of fresh organic produce to regional food pantries and veteran support centers.

One Saturday afternoon, an elderly man in a faded navy veterans' cap walked into the barn office.

""Are you Sarah Holloway?"" the man asked, removing his cap.

""I am,"" Sarah replied, wiping her hands on her apron.

""My name is Sergeant Thomas Miller. I served with your husband, David, in the motor pool at Fort Bragg thirty years ago.""

Sarah’s breath caught slightly. She stepped around the desk and shook the veteran’s rough, weathered hand.

""David spoke of you often, Sergeant Miller,"" Sarah said softly. ""He told me you were the only man who could keep an old diesel engine running on kerosene and prayer.""

The old soldier chuckled, but his eyes grew misty. ""David was the best of us, ma'am. When I heard that his family had turned this land into a sanctuary for folks who need a fresh start... I wanted to bring you something.""

He reached into his pocket and placed a small, brass-cased military compass on the desk.

""David gave this to me before we deployed to the Gulf,"" Miller said. ""He told me that if you keep your eyes on true north, you don't ever have to worry about getting lost in the dark. I think it belongs back with his family.""

Sarah picked up the compass. The brass was worn smooth from decades of touch, but the needle swung with absolute, unwavering precision, pointing true north across the green fields.
