Chapter 15: The Ground That Remains

They walked together to the center of the big meadow, near the ancient sugar maple where Arthur Holloway had first staked the property boundary seventy years before.
Leo knelt in the grass with a small hand trowel, helping his daughter dig a neat, three-inch hole in the rich, dark soil.
Little Clara carefully placed the acorn into the earth, covering it with soil, patting it down with her tiny, mud-stained hands.
""Will it grow into a giant tree, Grandma?"" Clara asked, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes.
""It will, my darling,"" Sarah replied, kneeling beside her and wiping a speck of dirt from the child’s cheek. ""It will grow deep roots that hold the soil together during the storms, and it will give shade to people who haven't even been born yet.""
Madeline walked up from the creek, joining them in the circle, placing her hand gently on Leo’s shoulder.
The family stood together in the warm morning sun, feeling the solid, immovable earth beneath their feet.
