Chapter 3: Echoes of the Father

When the front door clicked shut behind Madeline, the house felt cavernous.

Sarah walked over to the dining table, pulled a wooden chair out, and sat down heavily. The strength that had held her spine straight during the confrontation seemed to melt into the quiet hum of the refrigerator.

Leo walked over, pulling his varsity jacket tighter around his shoulders. He picked up the blue clipboard, looking at the faded signatures at the bottom of the page.

""Is that Grandpa Arthur’s handwriting?"" Leo asked softly.

""It is,"" Sarah said, a faint, melancholic smile touching her lips. ""Your grandfather was a difficult man, Leo. He built half the roads in this county with sheer stubbornness. He favored Madeline because she was loud and ambitious like him, but he knew she lacked roots. When he realized he was dying, he tried to balance the ledger.""

""Why didn't you look for this paper sooner, Mom?""

Sarah reached out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her son's ear. ""Because I wanted peace more than I wanted the truth. After your father died, I didn't have the energy to fight a war over concrete and drywall. I told myself that paying rent was the price of keeping our family together.""

""She wasn't keeping the family together,"" Leo said, his young voice carrying a bitter edge that broke Sarah’s heart. ""She was charging you rent to exist.""

""That changes today,"" Sarah said, standing up and opening her laptop. ""Not because I want to punish your aunt, but because you deserve to stand on ground that no one can pull out from under you.""

She dialed a local number. On the second ring, a voice answered.

""County Land Registry, this is Director Miller.""
