Chapter 8: The Aftermath on Crestview

Two days later, the storm had moved on from Crestview Lane, but the scars remained etched into the quiet suburban street.

Bradley Vance was in federal custody without bail, his real estate empire freezing under asset-forfeiture liens. The three point two million dollars had been recovered from the offshore digital wallet, safeguarding the pensions of hundreds of municipal workers.

Yet, as Sam walked out onto his front porch on Sunday morning, carrying a mug of coffee, he felt an unsettling stillness. Neighbors who had averted their eyes during his arrest now waved awkwardly from across their lawns, unsure of how to bridge the chasm of their premature judgment.

A dark pickup truck pulled into the driveway.

Frank stepped out, wearing his faded denim jacket and work boots. He walked up the concrete walkway, carrying a heavy wooden toolbox.

""Morning, Sam,"" Frank said, stopping at the bottom of the porch steps.

Sam looked down at the older man. The memory of the confrontation—the finger pointed in his face, the police cars in his driveway—still lingered like smoke in the air.

""Frank,"" Sam acknowledged quietly.

""I noticed the handrail on your porch steps has a loose bracket,"" Frank said, gesturing with his wrench. ""Thought I’d tighten it up before the rain comes tomorrow.""

Sam looked at the toolbox, then into Frank’s weathered, uncompromising face. He understood what the older man was offering: not a clumsy verbal apology, but the honest labor of making amends with his own hands.

Sam set his coffee mug on the railing. ""The lower screw is stripped. You’ll need a wider anchor.""

""I brought three sizes,"" Frank said, stepping up onto the porch.
