Chapter 13: The New Foundation

By autumn, Sam and Laura decided to stay in their home permanently rather than downsize.
With Sam’s back pay restored and the fraudulent debt expunged, they paid off Laura’s medical loans in full. Laura’s health had entered sustained remission, her strength returning with the crisp autumn air.
One Saturday afternoon, they hosted a neighborhood block party in their front yard.
The street that had once been barricaded by police cars was now lined with picnic tables, barbecue smokers, and children playing street hockey. Neighbors who had once whispered behind closed blinds brought homemade pies, casseroles, and apologies wrapped in warm embraces.
Frank stood by the smoker, wearing an apron that read *'Master of the Grill'*, flipping burgers with focused intensity while children ran around his legs.
Laura stood beside Sam on the front porch, leaning her head against his shoulder.
""Look at this porch, Sam,"" Laura murmured with a peaceful smile. ""Six months ago, I thought our lives were over right here.""

""A porch is just where the house meets the world, Laura,"" Sam said, wrapping his arm around her waist. ""Sometimes the world brings a storm. But if the house is built on truth, the door stays open.""
