Chapter 11: An Old Friendship Renewed

Summer arrived with long, warm twilights that settled gently over the hills.
Every Thursday evening, Frank’s pickup truck could be seen parked in the driveway of 412 Crestview Lane. The garage had been converted into a joint workshop where Sam and Frank spent hours restoring vintage wooden furniture and repairing bicycles for children at the county foster home.
Laura would often bring out plates of grilled chicken and sweet corn, and the three of them would sit in lawn chairs on the back patio, watching the fireflies dance above the lawn.
""You ever think about leaving town, Sam?"" Frank asked one evening, sipping a cold ginger ale. ""After everything that happened?""
Sam looked at the house—the newly painted shutters, the sturdy porch railing, the garden Laura had planted along the fence.
""No,"" Sam replied thoughtfully. ""Running away just leaves the ground empty for weeds. If you love a place, you stay and make sure the roots go deeper than the rot.""

Frank chuckled softly, tossing a scrap of wood into the scrap bin. ""Joe Hayes couldn't have said it better himself.""
