Judge Martinez adjusted her glasses, scanning the forensic report, the MAC-address bridge logs, and the sworn affidavit from the Newark hardware distributor.
Her expression shifted from routine judicial detachment to cold, sharp fury.
""Mr. Harris,"" Judge Martinez said, looking up from the bench with icy precision. ""Where is Councilman Bradley Vance this morning?""
Harris blinked, thrown completely off balance. ""I... I believe he is attending a regional development press conference at the municipal center, Your Honor.""
""Not anymore,"" Judge Martinez replied. She signed the order with a sharp strike of her fountain pen. ""The charges against Samuel Hayes are dismissed without prejudice. Mr. Hayes is to be released from custody immediately. Bailiff, dispatch a bench warrant for the immediate detention of Bradley Vance on charges of grand larceny, identity theft, and obstruction of justice.""
The courtroom erupted into pandemonium. Reporters scrambled for the exits, camera shutters firing frantically.
In the front row, Laura buried her face in her hands, sobbing with overwhelming relief.
The bailiff unlocked Sam’s shackles. Sam rubbed his bruised wrists, his chest shuddering as he walked out of the holding pen and straight into Laura’s open arms.
They held each other in the center of the courtroom aisle, oblivious to the flashbulbs and shouting crowd around them.
