Chapter 9 - The Power Cut

The sudden darkness swallowed the classroom in an eerie, unnatural silence. The low hum of the overhead fluorescent lights died away, leaving only the sound of distant rain tapping against the tall windowpanes. In the dim red glow of the exit sign, Leo whimpered, instinctively grabbing Julian’s sleeve.

"Stay close," Julian whispered, his eyes adjusting to the shadows. "The lights never go out unless someone flips the master breaker in the basement."

Marcus Sterling cursed under his breath, drawing a small, high-intensity tactical flashlight from his suit jacket. The beam cut a sharp white path through the dusty air, illuminating the rows of empty desks and the open doorway.

"Stay here," Marcus instructed the two security guards standing by the chalkboard. "Secure the boys. I’m going to check the main electrical panel in the hallway."

As Marcus stepped out into the dark corridor, his flashlight beam danced across the lockers, catching the glint of a discarded yellow plastic ruler lying abandoned on the floor. He knelt down, inspecting it closely. The plastic was cracked near the handle, bearing the unmistakable stress marks of repeated, violent impact.

Suddenly, a heavy metallic thud echoed from the stairwell at the end of the hall.

"Who's there?" Marcus called out, stepping forward with his flashlight raised, his other hand sliding beneath his suit jacket toward a concealed shoulder holster.

No answer came, only the slow, dragging sound of a shoe scraping against concrete steps, moving downward toward the basement archive rooms. Marcus followed the sound, his boots clicking softly against the floor as he approached the heavy fire door leading to the lower levels. The door was slightly ajar, a thin sliver of pale emergency light spilling out onto the floor.

He pushed the door open with the barrel of his flashlight and descended the concrete stairs into the subterranean chill of the school’s infrastructure. Rows of metal server racks hummed quietly in the gloom, their status lights blinking a frantic amber instead of their usual healthy green.

Standing in front of the primary server terminal was a figure wrapped in a dark trench coat, furiously typing lines of code into an override console with a portable flash drive plugged directly into the master motherboard.

"Step away from the terminal," Marcus commanded, leveling his voice and stepping into the aisle.

The figure stopped typing, slowly turned around, and pulled back the hood of the coat, revealing the pale, sweating face of Principal Thomas Vance holding a heavy wrench.
