Chapter 12 - The Perimeter Breach

The tactical radio strapped to Marcus Sterling’s shoulder hissed with static before a guard’s urgent voice broke through the silence. "Sterling! We’ve got an incoming vehicle breach at the south gate! Unmarked black SUVs, moving fast, ignoring the security barriers!"
Marcus cursed sharply, abandoning his slow ascent up the stairs and breaking into a full sprint toward the main exit. "Lock down the hallways! Get the boys into the interior administrative vault! Do not let anyone approach Room 104!"
He burst through the fire door into the main corridor, his hand resting firmly on his concealed firearm. The school was suddenly alive with the sound of running boots and shouting voices. Through the reinforced glass of the front entrance doors, two heavy black SUVs could be seen idling on the lawn, their high beams cutting blinding shafts of white light through the rain-soaked night.
Men in dark tactical gear, wearing unmarked matte-black helmets and carrying suppressed carbines, poured out of the vehicles. They didn’t bother with the locked front doors; the lead operative raised a heavy breaching charge and slammed it against the reinforced glass frame.
"Fall back! Fall back to the interior vault!" Marcus shouted into his comms, drawing his weapon as the deafening roar of the explosive charge shattered the front glass into a thousand glittering pieces.
Smoke and dust billowed into the foyer. Through the haze, a tall figure in a sharp gray suit stepped over the shattered frame. It wasn't a tactical grunt; it was Director Vance’s corporate handler from Apex Behavioral Systems—a man named Arthur Pendelton, holding a sleek digital tablet displaying real-time server tracking data.
"Sterling," Arthur called out smoothly, raising a hand to signal his men to hold their position in the foyer. "You’re making a terrible mistake trying to walk out with those drives. Apex owns the foundational IP for every behavioral metric generated in this district."
"Apex owns nothing except a federal indictment for child exploitation," Marcus yelled back, keeping his pistol raised and sights centered on Arthur’s chest. "Step away from the perimeter, Pendelton, or you’ll be joining your board members in a federal holding cell before midnight."
Arthur smiled coldly, tapping a button on his tablet. "We'll see about that. You downloaded the local server, Marcus, but you missed the primary fail-safe."

On the wall behind Marcus, the emergency security monitor flickered back to life, displaying not Evelyn’s face, but a countdown timer ticking rapidly down from sixty seconds.
