Chapter 5 - Unspoken Allegiances

The empty hallway was cold and smelled of floor wax and stale air. Helen Gable stood with her back against the lockers, her arms tightly crossed over her gray shirt. Principal Thomas Vance paced back and forth in front of her, his shoes squeaking on the polished wax.
"You absolute fool, Helen," Thomas hissed, keeping his voice low to avoid carrying back into the classroom. "What were you thinking using the physical correction policy on camera? You know the corporate sponsors monitor those feeds randomly. If Evelyn Vance decides to press charges, we lose our accreditation, and my career is finished."
Helen scoffed, a dry, humorless sound. "Evelyn Vance? That corporate ghost sitting in her ivory tower fifty miles away? She doesn't care about these kids. She cares about her stock portfolio. I run this classroom. If I don't break their spirits now, they grow up entitled, weak, and useless to the system."
"She saw you, Helen," Thomas interrupted, stopping his pacing to grab her shoulder. "She was on the private link. She spoke to me directly five minutes ago. She threatened to send state troopers if I didn't intervene within three minutes."
Helen’s eyes widened slightly, the first true crack appearing in her defensive facade. "She... she was watching live?"
"Yes. And she’s not alone," Thomas warned, running a hand over his thinning hair. "The board has been receiving anonymous complaints about your methods for months. I covered for you because your test scores were high, but this liability is too great. Effective tomorrow, you’re being reassigned to administrative filing."
Helen’s face twisted into an expression of profound betrayal. She stepped away from the locker, her voice dropping into a low, venomous whisper. "You think you can just discard me, Thomas? After everything I’ve kept quiet about this school? If I go down, I am taking the entire curriculum audit—and your precious funding—down with me."

Before Thomas could reply, the distant sound of heavy elevator chimes echoed from the end of the corridor, followed by the crisp, rhythmic footsteps of leather-soled shoes approaching the administrative wing.
