Chapter 14 - The Final Extraction

The red numbers on the server rack monitor blinked frantically: 00:10... 00:09... 00:08.

Marcus hurled himself through the basement door, sliding across the slick concrete floor until he slammed into the primary server rack. Without wasting a single millisecond, he reached into the master console, released the locking levers, and ripped the heavy, smoking solid-state drive bay straight out of its housing with a violent wrench.

Sparks showered across the metal casing. The screen flashed a blinding white light as the timer hit 00:00.

A sharp hiss of compressed gas echoed through the server room as the thermal wipe system incinerated the empty interior circuits, but Marcus was already standing upright, clutching the heavy, intact data drive against his chest like a shield.

He keyed his comms piece, panting heavily. "Drive is secured, Evelyn. Physical hardware is in my hands. The data is safe."

A heavy, collective breath seemed to exhale through the comms line from the boardroom. The red glow in Evelyn’s eyes slowly faded back to a calm, natural hazel as she leaned back in her leather executive chair, her posture relaxing for the first time all evening.

"Bring it home, Marcus," Evelyn instructed quietly, her voice steady and absolute. "And bring the boys with you. They’ve seen enough of this place."

Five minutes later, the heavy security doors of Oakridge Elementary slid open to reveal flashing blue and red lights reflecting off the steady evening rain. Federal marshals swarmed the property, leading Arthur Pendelton and his tactical team away in handcuffs. Principal Thomas Vance was escorted out in a separate cruiser, his head bowed in total defeat.

Marcus walked back into Room 104, where five-year-old Leo and his friend Julian were sitting side by side at the front desk, waiting quietly. Marcus knelt down, placing a gentle hand on Leo’s shoulder, and smiled warmly.

"Your mom is waiting in the car outside," Marcus said softly. "Are you ready to go home?"

Leo nodded, standing up and grabbing his small backpack. As they walked out the front doors of the school together, Leo looked back one last time at the empty hallway where the yellow ruler had fallen, realizing with profound relief that the fear no longer had any power over him.
