Chapter 8 - The Voice on the Line

Julian froze, his finger hovering millimeters above the screen of the satellite phone. The man standing in the doorway lowered his weapon slightly, stepping fully into the dim light of the abandoned office. It wasn’t the nameless thug from the alley. It was Viktor Vance—Julian’s oldest living business partner, a man Julian had assumed retired to a quiet estate in the Swiss Alps a decade ago.

Vance looked remarkably well-preserved for his age, dressed in an immaculate cashmere turtleneck and dark trousers, his silver hair neatly combed back. But his eyes were dead, cold as arctic ice.

"Viktor," Julian said, his voice remarkably steady despite the gun barrel pointed at his heart. "I should have known. You were always the architect of the cleanups."

Vance offered a thin, mirthless smile, stepping further into the room while two armed guards flanked him, securing the exits.

"You always lacked the stomach for the final ledger, Julian," Vance replied smoothly, gesturing with his hand for Julian to drop the satellite phone. "You thought you could walk away with your pristine reputation, build your little real estate empire, and pretend the blood on your hands washed off in the rain. But secrets have a way of echoing."

Julian slowly set the satellite phone down on the desk, keeping his body positioned protectively in front of Leo, who was cowering behind him.

"Leave the boy out of this, Viktor," Julian commanded, stepping forward. "He has nothing to do with our past. The debt was between us and Clara."

"Clara was a sentimental fool," Vance said, his tone hardening into steel. "She thought she could leverage her silence forever by hiding half the archives in a silver pendant. And now you’ve walked right back into the trap, bringing the missing piece directly to us."

Vance gestured to one of the guards, who stepped forward with a pair of plastic zip-ties, reaching for Leo’s arm.

The boy let out a sharp cry of terror, desperately trying to pull away. Something snapped inside Julian. All the caution, all the carefully calculated survival instincts evaporated, replaced by a cold, searing fury.

With blinding speed, Julian grabbed the heavy manila folder off the desk and hurled it directly into Vance’s face, blinding him momentarily. As the guards reacted, Julian lunged forward, grabbing the heavy brass desk lamp and smashing it across the nearest guard’s helmet with a resounding crash.

"Run, Leo! Run!" Julian roared, shoving the boy toward a side exit leading down an internal stairwell.

A deafening roar filled the room as automatic gunfire shredded the air, splintering desks and shattering glass around them. Julian grabbed Leo’s hand, diving through the open emergency door just as a bullet grazed the fabric of his sleeve, leaving a hot, burning sting on his shoulder.
