Chapter 7 - The Locked Door

The metallic scrape of lockpicks echoed clearly through the silent apartment, sounding like gunshots in the enclosed space. Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. He grabbed Leo by the collar of his torn grey shirt, hoisting the boy to his feet with sudden, desperate urgency.
"We need another way out," Julian whispered, scanning the dusty rooms.
"There's a hallway!" Leo pointed toward a dark corridor leading deeper into the abandoned flat. "I saw a door at the end when we came in!"
They sprinted down the narrow hallway just as the front door gave way with a sharp crack. Heavy footsteps poured into the apartment, accompanied by harsh whispers in a foreign language. Julian and Leo scrambled through the doorway at the end of the hall, slamming it shut behind them and throwing a heavy wooden sliding bolt into place.
They found themselves inside an old corporate office setup—rows of rusted metal filing cabinets, dust-covered desks, and broken computer terminals. It appeared to be an abandoned front for a shell company, likely operated by the very Syndicate members hunting them down.
Julian didn't hesitate. He rushed to the nearest desk, pulling open drawers frantically, searching for a communications device, a key, anything that could give them an advantage. Most drawers were empty, but the bottom drawer of the central mahogany desk was locked with a heavy brass padlock.
Without thinking, Julian picked up a heavy metal paperweight and smashed the lock repeatedly until the brass shackle snapped open. Inside lay a satellite phone, its battery indicator blinking green, alongside a thick manila folder labeled with a single word: CLEANSING.
Julian flipped open the folder. Inside were dozens of surveillance photographs, financial transfer records, and birth certificates—including one bearing Leo’s name, stamped with a red confidentiality seal.
"They've been watching you since the day you were born," Julian whispered, horror gripping his chest as he stared at a photo of Clara pushing a stroller through a park in a distant city, taken just three years ago.
"Why?" Leo asked, his voice trembling as he peered over Julian's shoulder at the devastating evidence. "Why would they care about me? I'm just a kid."
"Because you are the insurance policy your mother created," Julian said grimly. He picked up the satellite phone, pressing the power button. The screen flickered to life, displaying a pre-programmed contact labeled simply: CONTROL.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden door behind them splintered under the impact of a heavy kick. Wood chips flew across the room as a man in a black tactical vest stepped through the ruined frame, leveling a suppressed assault rifle directly at Julian’s chest.

"Put the phone down, Julian," a cold, familiar voice echoed from the hallway. "The game is over."
