Chapter 13 - The Broadcast

The satellite phone skidded across the dusty tile floor, its screen flashing a blinding, pulsating crimson light as an automated countdown timer appeared in bold digital letters: TRANSMISSION IN PROGRESS - 10 SECONDS.
Vance cursed loudly, lunging forward to crush the device under the heel of his shoe, but the armed guard nearest to him instinctively hesitated, distracted by the sudden movement and the blaring warning tone echoing off the stone walls.
"Shoot them! Shoot them both!" Vance screamed, his composed facade shattering into panicked rage as he stamped frantically on the glowing phone.
Before the guard could level his weapon, a deafening explosion ripped through the ceiling of the abandoned station above them. Chunks of concrete, dust, and twisted rebar rained down across the platform as a heavy emergency access hatch was blown wide open from the street level.
Bright, natural sunlight flooded into the subterranean darkness for the first time in hours, accompanied by the wailing sirens of municipal police cruisers echoing from the avenue above.
"Federal police! Drop your weapons! Nobody move!" a booming voice amplified through a megaphone echoed down the stairwell.
Chaos erupted instantly in the station. Three heavily armed tactical officers rappelled swiftly down ropes through the blasted ceiling hatch, immediately taking up tactical positions behind concrete pillars and training assault rifles directly on Vance and his men.
Vance froze, his foot hovering over the crushed satellite phone. He looked from the federal officers surrounding the platform to Julian, who stood bleeding and resolute, shielding Leo with his own body. The realization of total defeat settled over Vance’s face like a physical weight. Slowly, deliberately, he let his sidearm slip from his fingers, hearing it clatter softly against the dusty tile.
The guards followed suit, dropping their weapons as federal officers swarmed forward, slapping heavy steel zip-ties around their wrists and forcing them to the ground.
Julian let out a long, ragged breath, his knees finally buckling beneath him. The adrenaline that had sustained him through hours of terror and exhaustion evaporated instantly, replaced by a profound, overwhelming wave of weakness.
"Julian!" Leo cried out in panic, catching the old man as he slumped sideways onto the cold concrete floor.
Julian smiled weakly, his vision darkening at the edges as he reached up, gently touching the boy’s messy, dust-covered hair.
"We made it, Leo," Julian whispered, his voice fading to a soft murmur as darkness closed in around him.
