Chapter 7: The Awakening of Sarah

On Thursday morning, the sedation was gradually lifted at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Eleanor sat in the armchair beside Sarah’s bed, holding Maya on her lap.

Sarah’s eyelids fluttered. A soft groan escaped her lips as her head turned on the pillow. Her breathing tube had been removed, replaced by a gentle nasal cannula.

""Sarah... sweetheart,"" Eleanor whispered, leaning over the bed rail.

Sarah opened her hazel eyes. The room came into focus: the private VIP suite, the towering floral arrangements of white gardenias, the soft morning light, and her mother holding her daughter’s hand.

""Maya...?"" Sarah breathed, her voice raspy.

""Mommy!"" Maya scrambled up onto the edge of the mattress, throwing her small arms around Sarah’s neck, kissing her cheeks with frantic, joyful tears. ""Mommy, you woke up! Grandma brought us to her house!""

Sarah’s eyes moved from her child to Eleanor.

A complex storm of emotion washed across Sarah’s face: relief, terror, ancient defiance, and deep, aching vulnerability.

""Why, Mother?"" Sarah whispered, a tear tracking into her hairline. ""Why did you bring me here? To tell me I was wrong?""

Eleanor dropped to her knees beside the bed, bowing her head against Sarah’s mattress, weeping with an intensity that shook her entire body.

""No, Sarah,"" Eleanor cried, her voice muffled in the bedsheets. ""I brought you here because I love you. Because I was blind, arrogant, and wicked. You were never wrong for choosing love, Sarah. I was the one who destroyed our family. Please... if you have any mercy left in your heart, let me be your mother again.""

Sarah looked down at the white hair of the woman who had once seemed untouchable, feeling the warmth of her mother's tears soaking through the hospital linen.

Sarah’s trembling hand slowly lifted from the bed, her fingers coming to rest gently on Eleanor’s head.
