Chapter 12: A Trip to Montauk

In April, to celebrate the arrival of spring and Sarah’s complete medical recovery, the family traveled to the Vance coastal estate in Montauk, at the eastern tip of Long Island.

The property sat on a windswept bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean: ten acres of wild beach plums, rolling sand dunes, and a weathered cedar-shingle home with a wrap-around porch.

The ocean breeze was crisp and clean, carrying the salt spray and the cries of circling gulls.

Maya ran through the sandy grass in a pair of yellow rubber boots, chasing the receding waves with fearless laughter.

Sarah and Eleanor walked hand in hand along the shoreline, their coats wrapped tightly against the spring wind.

""I used to dream of this place when I was working the night shifts in Queens, Mama,"" Sarah said, looking out over the rolling blue water. ""I thought I would never see the ocean again.""

""The ocean was always here, Sarah,"" Eleanor said, squeezing her daughter’s hand. ""It was just waiting for us to come back together.""

Maya came running up the sand, holding out her small hands filled with smooth, iridescent sea-glass stones.

""Look, Grandma! Look, Mommy! I found blue ones for our garden!""

Eleanor knelt down in the sand, admiring the treasures, gathering both her daughter and her granddaughter into her arms as the Atlantic tide rolled peacefully over their boots.
