Chapter 6: The Shadows at the Gate

By Wednesday afternoon, the street outside the Fifth Avenue brownstone became the frontline of a quiet war.
A black sedan with tinted windows circled the block three times before parking across from the park entrance. A man in a heavy coat stepped out, walking up the stone steps of the residence to slip a white envelope through the mail slot.
Inside the envelope was a printed demand note:
*“Mrs. Vance: Your daughter owes $85,000 in accumulated principal and penalty interest to the Apex Commercial Services Group. Pay the balance in cash by Friday, or the medical files and photographs of her condition in Queens will be released to the press. We know the girl is in your house.”*
Eleanor sat at her desk in the library, holding the note with pristine cotton gloves.
Sitting across from her were Marcus Reed and Special Agent Thomas Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes and Racketeering Division.
""This isn't an ordinary collection agency, Eleanor,"" Agent Vance explained, reviewing the corporate registry. ""This is *Apex Credit*, a front company operated by the Castiglione syndicate. They prey on low-income single mothers in Queens and the Bronx, issuing micro-loans with three-hundred-percent illegal interest, then using physical extortion when they default.""
""How much did my daughter actually borrow?"" Eleanor asked, her jaw set like iron.
""Three thousand dollars,"" Agent Vance replied. ""To pay for her husband's funeral and Maya’s asthma medication two years ago.""
Eleanor closed her eyes, a sharp, physical pain piercing her heart. *Three thousand dollars.* A sum Eleanor spent on a single dinner at the Metropolitan Club was the debt that had driven her daughter into an alleyway to bleed.

""I will not pay them one dollar of extortion, Agent Vance,"" Eleanor said, opening her eyes with terrifying clarity. ""I will provide the federal government with twenty million dollars in forensic resources. I want every shell company, every enforcer, and every corrupt accountant in this syndicate put in federal prison for the rest of their natural lives.""
