Chapter 13: The Trial of the Extortionists

In June, the federal trial of *United States v. Castiglione, et al.* commenced at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse in Lower Manhattan.

The courtroom was packed to capacity with federal agents, civic advocates, and dozens of families who had been victimized by the predatory syndicate.

Sarah took the stand wearing a tailored navy suit, her posture straight, her eyes clear and unyielding.

Beside the witness box, in the front row of the gallery, sat Eleanor, holding Maya’s hand, their eyes locked onto Sarah with fierce, unconditional pride.

For three hours, Sarah delivered devastating, unassailable testimony. She recounted the threats, the illegal interest rates, and the terrifying night in the alleyway behind the Plaza Hotel.

""When you ran into that hotel, Mrs. Miller,"" the defense attorney cross-examined, attempting to shake her credibility, ""were you not trespassing on private commercial property to evade lawful debts?""

Sarah looked directly at the jury.

""I was not evading a debt, counselor,"" Sarah answered, her voice ringing with transcendent authority. ""I was running to save my child from predators who used debt as a weapon to destroy human dignity. My mother showed me that truth has a power that no amount of intimidation can ever break.""

The jury took less than ninety minutes to return guilty verdicts on all forty-eight counts of racketeering, armed extortion, and conspiracy.

The ringleaders were sentenced to twenty-five to thirty years in federal penitentiary.

As they emerged onto the courthouse steps into the bright summer sunshine, Sarah and Eleanor stood together before the flashing cameras—not as socialite and outcast, but as two women who had remade their world through the power of truth.
