Chapter 2

The marble floor felt uncomfortably cold beneath Elena’s knees as she stood up, smoothing the fabric of her green gown. The rich emerald color seemed out of place in the sterile, dimly lit service corridor where Jax led them. Goliath rose with a heavy, deliberate slowness that broke Elena’s heart; the mastiff was usually quick on his paws, reacting to the slightest shift in Jax’s posture. Now, the dog moved like an old machine running on a dying battery. The leather harness bit slightly into his thick shoulders, and Jax adjusted the metal rings with practiced care, ensuring the integrated tracking transponder hidden within the leather remained secure.

"The guards at the main gate are compromised," Jax murmured, keeping his voice low as they approached a discreet side panel disguised as a wood-paneled wall. He pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner hidden behind the molding. With a soft pneumatic hiss, the panel slid open to reveal a narrow spiral staircase descending into the subterranean depths of the estate.

Elena glanced back toward the grand hall. Through the carved wooden slats of the door, muffled strains of classical piano music could still be heard, drifting over the chatter of politicians and corporate executives who had no idea what was crawling beneath their feet. "Who do you think authorized the frequency test?" she asked, stepping into the cool, shadowed stairwell.

"Someone who thinks I am losing my grip," Jax answered, pulling the hidden door shut behind them until it clicked flush with the wall. The sudden darkness was absolute for a fraction of a second before emergency strip-lighting flickered on along the baseboards, casting a sickly amber glow over their faces. "Goliath was bred to resist chemical interrogation, but electronic pulses are a new frontier. If our benefactors in Zurich are shifting to cybernetic compliance, our entire operation is finished."

Goliath trotted heavily down the first few steps, his claws clicking rhythmically against the cold iron treads. Despite his lethargy, the dog stayed directly between Jax and Elena, maintaining a protective defensive posture born of years of rigorous tactical training. Jax kept his hand resting lightly on the brass ring of the harness, reading the subtle twitches in the animal's muscles. Every ripple of fur told a story of pain, endurance, and quiet defiance.

"We need to get him to the underground vet facility in sector four," Elena said, her practical nature taking over as she descended the winding stairs. "Dr. Vance is the only one who can flush the synthetic compounds from his bloodstream without triggering the kill-switch in the transponder."

"Vance is a risk," Jax replied flatly, his boots hitting the concrete floor at the bottom of the stairs with a dull echo. "He reports directly to the oversight board. If they find out Goliath’s neural dampener failed, they’ll lock down the entire eastern seaboard."

"We don't have a choice," Elena countered, stopping to turn and face Jax in the dim corridor. Her blue eyes flashed with fierce determination. "Look at him, Jax. He's dying from the inside out. I didn't spend five years keeping this syndicate’s financial records straight just to watch a good dog get disassembled like a broken hard drive."

Jax looked at her for a long moment, studying the genuine human empathy that still flickered within her despite the brutal world they inhabited. He gave a single, slow nod. "Sector four it is. Move quietly."
