Chapter 14

The salt air of the gulf coast was thick and humid, carrying the distant cry of sea gulls and the rhythmic crashing of waves against jagged shoreline rocks. The safehouse was an old, weather-beaten stone cottage perched atop a rocky cliff overlooking the open ocean, far removed from the glittering estates and sterile laboratories of their former lives. There were no double wooden doors here, no crystal chandeliers, and no armed guards patrolling the perimeter.

Jax unlocked the heavy oak front door of the cottage, pushing it open to reveal a modest, sunlit interior furnished with worn wooden furniture, a stone fireplace, and large windows that framed the endless expanse of the blue ocean. Goliath trotted inside immediately, his tail wagging with a slow, rhythmic motion as he explored the new environment, sniffing at the wooden floorboards before sprawling out comfortably in front of the sunlit bay window.

Elena stepped inside, closing the door behind them with a soft, satisfying click. She walked over to the window, resting her hands on the wooden sill as she watched the whitecaps roll across the water beneath the brilliant afternoon sun.

"It's quiet," Elena said, her voice filled with a profound sense of peace.

"Too quiet for some," Jax replied, setting his tactical vest and weapons on the kitchen table before walking over to stand beside her. "The board won't forgive the exposure of the financial ledger. Somewhere out there, teams are trying to trace the analog radio transmission back to its source."

"Let them try," Elena said, turning to look up at him with steady, clear eyes. "Without the offshore accounts, they don't have the leverage to buy local law enforcement or hire private extraction squads. They're just ordinary criminals now, hiding behind closed doors."

Jax looked down at her, a rare, genuine softness touching the corners of his stern eyes. The harsh, unrelenting intensity that had defined his expressions throughout the ordeal had finally softened into quiet contentment. He reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of blonde hair away from her forehead.

"We made it out, Elena," Jax said quietly.

"We all did," she replied, glancing over toward the window where Goliath lay resting his heavy head between his paws, bathed in the warm, golden light of the coastal afternoon. The mastiff let out a deep, relaxed sigh, his dark eyes closing as he drifted off into a peaceful, unbroken sleep.

For the first time in their lives, there were no secrets to guard, no codes to crack, and no enemies waiting in the shadows. There was only the open sea, the quiet breeze, and the freedom they had earned through blood, endurance, and quiet defiance.
