Chapter 1

The heavy double doors of the grand hall clicked shut with a muffled, echoing thud, sealing off the laughter of the oblivious guests who remained inside the ballroom. Outside the perimeter of the elite celebration, the air was dense and cold, smelling faintly of old cedar, melted candle wax, and expensive dry cleaning. Jax stood near the bottom of the grand staircase, his black suit immaculate, his black tie straight, and his expression as unyielding as iron. Beside him, the massive dark brown mastiff panted softly, its heavy leather harness fitted with brass rings that clinked with every subtle shift of its massive frame. The dog’s dark eyes were heavy, clouded with a strange, unnatural fatigue that did not belong to a creature of such size and power.

Elena remained kneeling beside the animal on the marble floor, her emerald green evening gown pooling around her like dark water. Her blonde hair, neatly tied back, caught the cold light of the giant crystal chandelier overhead. With a soft, practiced movement, she took a clean white cloth from her small beaded purse and gently wiped away a droplet of champagne that had splashed onto the mastiff’s thick jowl during the superficial toast inside. Her fingers brushed against the scarred leather of the harness, feeling the subtle vibration of the animal's strained breathing. She looked up at Jax, her jaw tight, her eyes searching his face for answers she knew would not come easily.

"What did they do to him, Jax?" she repeated under her breath, the words carrying the quiet weight of an interrogation.

Jax did not blink. His gaze remained fixed on the far end of the corridor, where two armed guards stood rigidly beside a secondary service exit, their hands resting flat against their thighs. He knew the inner workings of this syndicate better than anyone. He knew the men who wore the tuxedos and raised crystal glasses in superficial camaraderie. But this dog—Goliath—was different. Goliath was not merely a pet or a status symbol for the wealthy elite who funded their operations; he was a living archive, a biological vault designed to carry encrypted chemical signatures across international borders. The champagne splash from earlier had not been an accident. It was a test. A subtle reminder of the invisible poisons circulating through the upper echelons of their world.

"They didn't just sedate him," Jax finally said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that barely traveled across the hall. "They tested a frequency. A localized neural dampener. Someone inside this very room is trying to see if Goliath’s conditioning can be overridden remotely."

Elena’s hand trembled slightly against the mastiff’s neck, but she steadied herself, refusing to show weakness in front of the guards. She had spent years navigating this dangerous landscape, masking her genuine empathy behind a veneer of sophisticated indifference. Yet, looking at the loyal beast that had saved her life twice during border extractions, her professional detachment fractured. "If they can override Goliath, they can override any of us," she whispered.

"Exactly," Jax replied, taking a slow step forward. "Which is why we are leaving through the service elevator now. No more games."
