Chapter 9

The door to the basement stairwell swung open with a slow, deliberate creak, revealing a steep flight of wooden steps descending into absolute darkness. A faint smell of old paper, damp earth, and ozone drifted up from the lower level.

Julian reached into his pocket, pulled out his smartphone, and flicked on the flashlight beam, pointing it down the steps. The beam cut through the darkness, illuminating dust motes dancing in the cold air, but it stopped abruptly about halfway down, blocked by a heavy metal security gate fitted with an electronic keypad.

"There’s a sub-level," Julian murmured, stepping closer to the edge. "The blueprints didn't show this."

"The blueprints were drawn up in nineteen-eighty-five, long before your father excavated the foundation to hide the paper trail," Arthur said, his voice tight. He looked down the dark stairwell with undisguised dread. "He swore to me he filled it in."

"People like my father don't fill in holes, Arthur. They just change the locks on them," Elena said. She walked past Julian, her professional composure entirely replaced by a grim determination to find the truth. She placed her hand on the cold wooden handrail.

"Don't go down there, Elena," Martha called out from the hallway. "Once the archive is unsealed, there's no going back to the life you've built. Every case you've won, every partnership you've secured—it's all indexed down there."

Elena paused, her foot hovering over the first step. She looked back at Chloe, who gave her a solemn, encouraging nod.

"Go on, Mom," Chloe said. "You wanted the truth about who owns this house. The answer is at the bottom of those stairs."

Elena took a breath, stepped down onto the first wooden tread, and began her descent into the dark. The door clicked shut automatically behind her, cutting off the light from the kitchen and leaving her with only the faint glow of Julian's flashlight beam guiding her way.
