Chapter 2

The digital display on the smart lock glowed a faint, mocking blue before fading into complete darkness. Elena stared at the brass handle, her hand hovering just inches away. The battery compartment was internal, controlled entirely by a master administrative app that had supposedly been transferred to her phone during the closing process.
"You don't have the administrative rights," Elena said, turning back to face Martha with a mixture of disbelief and rising anger. "The transfer went through the escrow company on Tuesday. I have the digital receipt."
Martha adjusted the strap of her large backpack, her expression entirely unreadable. She did not step forward to bridge the gap between them, maintaining a deliberate distance that felt calculated.
"Escrow companies close transactions, Elena, but they don't rewrite history," Martha said softly. She reached into her beige blazer pocket, pulled out a small, encrypted thumb drive, and held it between two fingers. "You bought the frame. You didn't buy the photograph developed inside it."
Inside the house, the muffled sound of a heavy latch sliding home echoed down the hallway. Elena stiffened, realizing someone was still inside.
"Julian?" Elena called out toward the partially open door, her voice cutting through the morning quiet.
There was no immediate answer. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the distant hum of traffic on the suburban street. Martha watched Elena’s reaction closely, noting every micro-expression, every hesitation.
"Julian isn't answering because he realizes the terms of his employment have changed," Martha said. "Just like yours."
"My name is on the deed, Martha," Elena insisted, stepping past her toward the threshold. "If you think a stunt like changing the lock is going to stop the eviction process, you are profoundly mistaken. The sheriff’s notice was posted yesterday morning."
"The sheriff is going to have a very difficult time executing an eviction on a property that legally belongs to a trust that was dissolved under federal bankruptcy protection twenty minutes ago," Martha replied smoothly.

Elena stopped in her tracks. The blood drained from her face. She pulled her phone from her blazer pocket, her fingers trembling slightly as she tapped the screen to open the legal portal. The app loaded slowly, the spinning wheel of the interface mocking her urgency. When the page finally rendered, the status indicator flashed a bright, angry crimson. The property title had reverted to an anonymous entity bearing a single, familiar set of initials.
Before Elena could look up to demand an explanation, the front door swung wide open from the inside, revealing Julian holding a printed ledger.
