Chapter 7

The red emergency lights mounted near the ceiling flickered to life, casting a pulsing crimson glow across the faces of everyone in the foyer. The high-pitched warning tone grew louder, filling the enclosed space with an unbearable urgency.

"Stop it, Martha!" Elena shouted, lunging forward to grab the fiber-optic cable, but Arthur intercepted her, his grip on her wrist firm and unyielding.

"If you pull that cable while the encryption cycle is running, the entire database—including every financial record, every land title, and every identity tied to this trust—vanishes into the dark web permanently," Arthur said, his voice cutting through the noise.

Chloe didn't panic. She walked over to the main terminal, pulled a small silver drive from her pocket, and plugged it directly into the master console. The pulsing red lights flickered, shifted to a steady yellow, and the countdown timer on the screen froze at 00:14.

"You're too late, Granddad," Chloe said, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced ease. "The transfer protocol was initiated the moment Mom turned the key in the lock this morning. The house isn't yours, Martha isn't the owner, and the debt was cleared twenty minutes ago."

Elena stared at her daughter, feeling as though the ground beneath her feet was dissolving. "Cleared? With what money, Chloe? You’re a student."

"I'm not a student, Mom," Chloe said, not looking up from the screen. She pressed the enter key with a definitive strike. "I’m the auditor who was hired to investigate your firm's acquisition of this property."

The screen flashed green, displaying a single line of text across the monitor: Transaction Complete. Welcome home, Director.

Before anyone could speak, the front door slammed shut from the outside with a heavy, automatic lock engagement, and the sound of iron bolts sliding into place echoed through the quiet house.
