Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap

The heavy parchment of the court order crinkled slightly in Agent Miller’s gloved hands as he held it out toward Daniel. The words printed in stark black ink seemed to mock the chaos scattered across the hardwood floor—the spilled oranges, the dented suitcase, and the fading bruises on Emma’s arm. Daniel did not reach for the papers. His arms remained stiff at his sides, his fists clenched so tightly that his fingernails bit painfully into his palms.

"This is absurd," Daniel said, his voice dangerously low. "My mother lives with us, but she does not own this property. My name and my wife's name are the only ones on the deed."

Agent Miller adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his expression entirely neutral, devoid of any human empathy. "According to the filing submitted at 8:15 AM today by the firm of Sterling & Vance, the mortgage was fully paid off three months ago using funds from a trust where Mrs. Martha Reynolds is listed as the sole primary trustee. Legally, Mr. Reynolds, you are currently residing in a structure owned entirely by the estate your mother controls."

Upstairs, the heavy click of a door closing echoed through the hall as Martha reached the bottom of the stairs, stepping past Agent Miller with the practiced grace of a seasoned litigant. She didn't look like a woman who had just been caught on camera attempting to push her daughter-in-law down a flight of stairs. She looked like a CEO leaving a successful board meeting.

"I tried to warn him, Officer," Martha said, her voice dripping with false sorrow. "He brings home a woman with no background, no standing, and expects me to simply hand over thirty years of family heritage to strangers."

Emma pushed herself up from the bottom step, ignoring the sharp pain shooting up her ribs. She stepped directly into Martha’s path, her eyes blazing with a fierce, quiet rage that completely eclipsed her physical injuries. "You planned this. Every single piece of it. The suitcase, the stairs, the timing of this filing. You knew we were coming home today."

Martha tilted her head, a cold smile touching the corners of her thin lips. "Smart girl. Too bad the court doesn't care about your suspicions. They only care about signatures, trust deeds, and digital custody."

Daniel’s head snapped toward his mother, a terrifying realization dawning behind his eyes. He reached into his pocket again, pulling out his smartphone, desperate to show the investigator the video footage that would instantly shatter Martha’s fragile house of cards. But as his thumb tapped the screen, the display remained black. He tapped it harder, pressing the power button, but the battery indicator flashed a tiny red icon before dying completely.

"Looking for your little digital insurance policy?" Martha asked softly, pulling a sleek black smartphone identical to his from her maroon blouse pocket. She held up a small, portable signal-jamming device that blinked a dull green light. "You really should pay more attention to your surroundings, Danny."

Agent Miller turned toward the door, gesturing for them to step back. "You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises while the asset inventory is conducted. Good day."
