Chapter 10 - The Voice from the Past

The digital timer on the galvanized trunk continued its silent, relentless countdown, flashing its red numbers against the dim interior of the shed like a heartbeat counting down to zero. Daniel picked up the old reel-to-reel player, his fingers tracing the worn plastic casing. The machine was heavy, its power cord dangling loose until he spotted an old extension cord plugged into the wall outlet behind the workbench. He jammed the plug into the socket, and with a low, mechanical hum, the tape deck whirred to life.

Emma stood just outside the open doorway, keeping watch on the dark treeline at the edge of the yard while the autumn wind whipped her brown hair across her face. "Hurry, Daniel," she called out over her shoulder. "We only have a few minutes left on that timer."

Daniel pressed the play button. For a moment, nothing came through the small integrated speaker except a harsh wave of static and magnetic hiss. Then, out of the distortion, a deep, weary voice broke through the silence—a voice Daniel hadn't heard in over two decades.

“If you are listening to this tape, Martha has finally pushed things past the point of no return,” the voice of Arthur Reynolds rasped through the speaker, sounding tired, desperate, and entirely real.

Daniel closed his eyes, a sharp wave of grief crashing over him as he recognized his father’s cadence. “The fire at the manufacturing plant in ninety-four wasn't an accident caused by faulty wiring, as the insurance reports claimed. Martha disabled the fire suppression grid three hours before the shift ended. She needed the insurance payout to cover her mounting debts from private accounts, and she needed me out of the picture to take full control of the corporate holdings.”

The tape hissed loudly as Arthur paused to catch his breath, the sound of paper shuffling in the background filling the small shed.

“I tried to stop her, but she threatened to institutionalize me using forged medical evaluations signed by her brother in the county health department. If you find this, Daniel, it means she has turned her sights on you and whoever you brought into her house. Don't trust the trust documents. The real corporate deeds are hidden inside the double-bottom filing cabinet in her downtown office, locked under a secondary code that only this recording can unlock.”

A loud mechanical beep suddenly echoed from the digital timer on top of the trunk, signaling that the countdown had reached zero. But instead of an explosion, the internal mechanism of the trunk clicked shut, releasing a hidden bottom panel that slid open with a soft metallic glide.

Inside the newly revealed compartment sat a heavy brass key stamped with the logo of the First National Bank of downtown Seattle.

Daniel reached in, picked up the key, and looked up just as a bright beam of headlights swept across the yard, illuminating the open door of the shed. A sleek black sedan pulled slowly into the driveway, its engine cutting off with a soft purr.

Martha stepped out of the driver’s side, holding a black leather briefcase and looking straight toward the shed with an expression of cold, unyielding triumph.
