Chapter 1 - The First Fall

The heavy wooden staircase in the suburban colonial felt more like a trap than a pathway. Emma clutched the handle of her rolling suitcase, her knuckles turning white against the polished leather. Below her, the entryway stretched out with its neutral tones and pristine hardwood floors. Behind her stood Martha, her mother-in-law, whose short grey hair and maroon blouse seemed almost professional, like a uniform for judgment. Emma pulled too hard, the wheels catching the lip of the top step. She lost her footing, the suitcase tumbling violently past her ribs as she went down hard, scraping her elbows against the grain.
"Get out of my house!" Emma screamed, her voice cracking with pure adrenaline and a sharp, sudden terror that radiated up from her tailbone.
Before the echoes of her fall could even die against the drywall, the front door swung inward. Daniel burst through the threshold, his navy jacket unzipped and his arms full of plastic grocery bags. The produce spilled across the floor in a chaotic rainbow of apples and citrus. He dropped the remaining bags, the sound muted by the area rug, and rushed forward.
"Emma?" Daniel asked, dropping to his knees beside her on the wooden steps, his face pale with shock.
"She fell. She lost her footing. She pushed me," Martha interjected instantly, her voice unnaturally steady, smoothing the front of her blouse with manicured fingers.
Daniel stared between them, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief. He looked down at Emma’s bruised arm, then slowly raised his gaze upward, fixing it on the small dome of the security camera mounted discreetly above the front door frame. Martha stepped closer, her hand reaching out to touch his arm defensively.
"That is a lie. I never touched her," Daniel said, his breath hitching as the realization of what just happened began to settle into his bones.
"Danny, I would never hurt her," Martha whispered, her eyes shifting nervously toward the lens of the camera.
Daniel pulled his smartphone from his pocket with trembling fingers, his thumb swiping across the glass with practiced speed to open the local server app. Martha’s face drained of color, her eyes turning wide and panicked as the buffering wheel spun on the screen.
"Then tell me why you shoved me," Emma demanded, pushing herself up onto her forearms.
"Daniel, you don't need to do that," Martha pleaded, her voice dropping an octave into a low, desperate hum.

"Why not? Why shouldn't I watch it?" Daniel demanded, pressing play just as the frame began to buffer the exact moment of the shove.
