Chapter 3 - An Unexpected Arrival at the Door

The sudden chime of the doorbell vibrated through the quiet frame house, shattering the fragile tension that had settled in the entryway. Daniel froze midway through bending down to assist Emma, his hand suspended in the air. Emma pulled back slightly, wrapping her arms around her torso as the cold realization washed over her that their private family nightmare was no longer contained within these four walls. The groceries lay scattered across the floor like colorful debris from a shipwreck, and the suitcase still rested awkwardly near the bottom of the staircase, a silent monument to the violence that had just transpired upstairs.
"Are we expecting anyone?" Emma asked, her voice trembling slightly as she winced against the dull ache in her shoulder blade.
Daniel shook his head slowly, his eyes darting back toward the security camera lens above the door. "No. No one knows we are back early from the retreat."
The chime rang a second time, more insistent now, accompanied by a heavy knock that rattled the frosted glass panes of the front entryway. Martha appeared at the top of the stairs, her small rolling overnight bag already in hand. She looked down at the door with a strange, knowing smirk that sent an immediate shiver down Emma's spine. It was the look of a woman who had contingency plans stacked neatly within contingency plans.
"You better answer that, Daniel," Martha called down, her tone dripping with an unsettling confidence. "You might find that your little digital proof isn't the only piece of evidence floating around this neighborhood today."
Ignoring his mother, Daniel stepped over a stray orange and reached for the brass doorknob. He pulled the heavy wooden door open, expecting a neighbor with a stray package or perhaps a local delivery driver. Instead, standing on the porch was a tall man in a dark trench coat, holding a leather briefcase and wearing a badge pinned to the inside pocket of his jacket that identified him instantly as an investigator from the county probate court.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Reynolds," the man said smoothly, his eyes scanning the chaotic entryway with practiced indifference. "I am Agent Miller. I am here regarding the emergency estate freeze filed this morning by your mother’s legal counsel."
Daniel felt the floor drop out from beneath him. He glanced back up the stairs, but Martha was already descending step by step, her expression transformed into one of fragile, elderly distress.
"Daniel, thank goodness you're here," Martha said, her voice instantly modulating into a theatrical quiver as she addressed the investigator. "My son has been under severe emotional duress, and I fear for the safety of my late husband’s estate."
Emma stared at the investigator in utter disbelief, realizing the shove on the stairs was only the opening salvo in a much larger war.

Agent Miller stepped past Daniel into the foyer without waiting for an invitation, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his briefcase. "Mr. Reynolds, by court order, you and your wife are legally barred from accessing any marital or familial assets until a full competency and guardianship hearing is completed."
