Chapter 9 - The Intruder in the Hall

The heavy thud of furniture hitting the floor echoed from the front hallway, shattering the eerie quiet of the house. Marcus dropped the old wooden diary back into the pantry box, his heart hammering against his ribs as adrenaline flooded his system.

"Elena!" Marcus yelled, abandoning the pantry and sprinting across the kitchen island and down the dark hallway.

He rounded the corner into the foyer just in time to see the front door standing wide open to the cool night air. Elena was backing away from the threshold, her hands raised in terror, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Standing just inside the doorway was a tall, unfamiliar figure dressed in dark clothing, wearing a ski mask that obscured every feature except for a pair of cold, calculating eyes.

"Who are you?" Marcus demanded, stepping protectively in front of Elena and shouting down the hall toward the living room where Leo and Chloe were huddled. "Get out of my house!"

The intruder didn't speak. Instead, the man’s eyes flicked briefly toward the master bedroom hallway before locking onto Marcus with an unmistakable intensity. Without making a sound, the figure lunged forward, not to attack Marcus, but to grab the leather portfolio Elena had left sitting on the entryway console table.

Marcus reacted on pure instinct, diving forward and tackling the intruder around the waist. The two men crashed hard against the hardwood floor, a flurry of limbs and heavy breathing filling the entryway. The intruder was remarkably strong, striking Marcus across the jaw with a sharp, heavy blow that sent a flash of white-hot pain shooting through his skull.

"Marcus!" Elena screamed, grabbing a heavy ceramic vase from the console and bringing it down toward the floor near the struggling men to create a distraction.

The intruder twisted violently, breaking Marcus’s grip with a vicious shove that sent Marcus skidding across the slick wood into the wall. Before Marcus could recover his footing, the masked man grabbed the leather portfolio, turned on his heel, and sprinted out the open front door into the darkness of the suburban night.

Marcus pushed himself up, wiping a smear of blood from his split lip, and stumbled to the doorway. He looked out into the street, but the neighborhood was pitch black and entirely deserted, save for the rustling of leaves in the autumn wind.

"Are you okay?" Elena pounced on him, checking his face with trembling hands. "Marcus, what did he take? What was in that portfolio?"

Marcus breathed heavily, his chest heaving as he stared out into the empty street. "Everything," he whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "That portfolio had the copies of the Chicago medical records, my initial notes, and the paperwork Detective Miller gave us."

Elena went white as a sheet. "How did anyone know we had that? The police only dropped it off an hour ago!"

Marcus turned back inside, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. The intruder hadn't broken in at random. Someone had sent him. Someone who knew the house, knew the layout, and knew exactly where Elena had placed the evidence.

He walked slowly back down the hallway toward the master bedroom, his eyes fixed on the closed door at the end of the hall—Maya’s domain. If the police had taken Maya into custody, who was pulling the strings from the outside?

Suddenly, a faint, rhythmic clicking sound echoed from the master bedroom, followed by the soft chime of the smart-home hub rebooting itself from a remote override.

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, his hand instinctively reaching for his phone. The screen flashed with a new notification from the home security app: Remote Administrator Override Accepted. Welcome back, Admin.
