Chapter 7 - The Badge at the Door

The heavy oak door swung fully open, revealing Detective Miller flanked by a female social worker holding a standardized emergency intake clipboard. The harsh porch light cut a bright swath across the hardwood floor of the entryway, illuminating the frozen tableaux of the family in crisis.

Marcus stood motionless, the phone still glowing in his hand with the dark history of Chicago staring up from the screen. Elena let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief against the wall, while Maya stood rigid, her eyes narrowing into cold, calculating slits as she assessed the intrusion.

"Mr. Vance?" Detective Miller repeated, taking a measured step across the threshold. His eyes swept over the group, noting the tear-stained cheeks of the adults and the tense posture of everyone present. "I need you to step back, please. We have a court-ordered welfare inspection for the minors residing in this home."

Marcus didn't move away. Instead, he raised his hand, holding up the phone with the digital logs and the archival news clipping clearly visible on the screen.

"You don't need to look for evidence, Detective," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, stripped of all warmth. "It’s all right here. The access logs, the restriction schedules, and her prior record in Illinois."

Maya’s head snapped toward Marcus, her face twisting into an expression of pure betrayal. "You traitor," she hissed, her voice a venomous whisper. "You’re destroying your own family over a bunch of lies and misconstrued data!"

Detective Miller stepped forward, holding up a hand to silence Maya before glancing down at the phone screen Marcus extended toward him. The detective’s eyes scanned the glowing text, his expression hardening with every passing second. He tapped his radio clip, calling in backup and medical personnel to stand by at the perimeter.

"Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, addressing Maya directly without a trace of hesitation. "I am placing you under temporary investigative detention for suspected child endangerment and willful deprivation of basic needs. You have the right to remain silent."

Before the detective could finish reading her rights, Maya lunged. It wasn't a wild, clumsy attack, but a sudden, calculated sprint toward the hallway table where her car keys and purse lay. She grabbed the metal key ring, her fingers wrapping tightly around the panic button of her vehicle, but Detective Miller was too fast. He grabbed her arm, spinning her around and pinning her wrists gently against her back with practiced efficiency, slapping the cold steel of handcuffs onto her wrists with a sharp click.

Chloe let out a terrified shriek from the dining room, running down the hall and burying her face in Leo’s jacket as her brother shielded her with his small body.

"Mom!" Leo yelled, his voice breaking as he watched Maya being restrained. Despite everything, the boy’s eyes filled with desperate tears.

Marcus rushed down the hall, dropping to his knees to wrap his arms around both of his children, pulling them tight against his chest. He closed his eyes, breathing in the scent of laundry detergent and childish fear, knowing the nightmare was only just beginning.

"It’s okay," Marcus whispered fiercely into Leo’s hair, his own eyes burning with unshed tears. "Daddy’s got you. You're safe now."

Detective Miller guided Maya toward the open front door, her navy dress rustling softly against the frame as she was led out into the cool night air. Right before stepping over the threshold, Maya turned her head back, her eyes locking onto Marcus with a look so cold and devoid of life that it sent a shiver straight down his spine.

"You think this is the end, Marcus?" Maya whispered, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet foyer. "You don't even know what she ate before you got home."
